Why am I looking into GameMaker: Studio? Well I downloaded a top down airplane shooter game and as it booted up it showed a splash screen saying it was made with GameMaker: Studio. So I decided to look into the engine. Real quick it became obvious it was a 2D game engine but the most appealing part is that it is free and anything you make with any version (including the free version) is 100% yours (assuming you own all the copyrights on assets used of course) and you’re free to make profits off of anything you make. Now for any indie developer that’s an amazing deal, though personally I think the full “Master Collection” option is very reasonable at $500 considering it offers exporting to iOS and Android OS.
That said for now I’ll be diving into the free version as I want to get more familiar with the engine before I dust off all my 2D game ideas I’ve had in the past and even some new ones I’m already coming up with just from beginning to play with GameMaker: Studio.
I picked up a copy of The Game Maker’s Apprentice as it’s a book written for game development using the GameMaker engine, specifically version 6.1 as the book was written in 2006. Considering the book is now 7~ years old it has so far held up quite nicely. I dove into the book and within 30 minutes of reading it I already had a game up and running. Continue reading
